DS Grows up

The DS games, have always been a little bit...... arse.
No one bothered to do anything more than the blatently obvious with the touch screen, the graphical capaibilties and the Dual screenyness of it, and if they did marginally push the envelope a little, they only ever concentrated on one of the three.
That and the average age for the games being about 3, (See "nintendogs and other such criminal excuses for entertainment) being my justification for my opening comment.

Fear no more, 2009 has already seen some GEMs of console gameplay, and not just in comparison to the PSP and iphone. the Wii is just not accurate enough a medium, and underpowered in my opinion, the Xbox and the PS3 may have the raw power, but innovative gameplay is limited to one screen, and a heap of buttons, sticks and analogue throttles.
close, but no cigar.
While previously, Zelda was about as good as the DS got, (dont get me wrong zeldas excellent but it has been overshadowed) the new developments really are pushing the limit of the device, im suprised the card hasnt got hot running some of these....

GTA Chinatown Wars; Ultimate gangland Sandbox, in its finest form. top down view was classic, and in my opinion as soon as it went 3rd person, it went rubbish and i lost all interest.
the new rendition, is better than both, and excells so much more with the quite frankly PERFECT use of the DS capabilities.
110% balanced use of Pad buttons,stylus required touchscreen, and thumb based touchscreen menu handling.

From the Abyss: a Classic looking RPG, bashing monsters and picking up spells, again perfectly controlled use of the touch screen for thumb based organisation of items and skills, AND to top it off, seamless co op with another DS over wifi connection.

Shaun White DS: touch controlled snowboarding, top notch soundtrack, and excellent gameplay. the only fault, no videos on OooToob, so ill use this Webcam jobby instead.

Not this, which is brought to us by Steve, who wished to work with his camera out in the real world, but didn't want to drag his bulky laptop around with him everywhere he went. So, he came up with his own solution by hacking a DS to work with his big fancy Canon camera, which allows him to do precise shooting and mess with a whole bunch of other settings. Good job, Steve!"

NDS homebrew

it turns out, There is SO much cool stuff for the DS!

I am converted from microsofts raw power in gaming, to the gadgetyness of nintendos and the DS quite easily having tried and tested. but the possibility for homebrew on the DS just takes it to a whole new level!
people making thier own games for a console that might as well ave been designed with homebrew in mind. its perfect for the job!

I may have mentioned the most excellent web game, crayon physics before in the past.
well now someones made a version for the DS;

pocket physics
draw shapes and structures, define thier physics and apply gravity.

its a shame gravity is so removed in an artifical world isnt it.....

NO! an NDS motion pack! a homebrew handful of a accelertometers and gyroscopes that plug into slot2 allow you to convert your static DS into a motion sensing.... thing of motion sensing.

what fun!!

Other homebrew freeware programs that i'm going to have to look into?

an FTP server (allowing you to access files on computer from the DS via wireless technology)
a remote for your computer, view the monitor via the screens and control all functions, again via wifi.
use it as a skype mobile
use the DS as a wireless game pad for PC

Confusion

As the last post, of around 20 minutes ago, on MTBwaffleblog may indicate. confusion runs awry at the moment. Having been working for coming on six months, I've still got no money. Sure, I've bought a car, which explains quite a chunk. but money coming in is offset by my rather expensive diesel/nutrition habit (in that order). More beer tokens are passing through my grasp than I've ever seen in my whole (hugely extensive 22 year) existence. I'm still not getting to grips with it, and if I don't soon, the insurance will be round again (for one of many) and I wont have the tokens to appease the man. I need to declutter my life. I've needed to declutter my life for a while now, but a surfeit of bike "spares" and tat are taking their toll. My registry is suffering, in both Windows and the real world. I've aimed to do this before, but it has never worked out massively well due to a lack of inclination to wrap stuff up for the fleabay people. perhaps I shall just give it away to a better cause. that's a much better idea. Broken set of forks, perhaps someone has a pair with the other half broken, and could make a whole. a much better use for them than cluttering up the garage. The same applies for some tired MPH disk brakes. not massively useful for me, but some one who wants a foray into the wonderful world of disk brakes for the price of a pint may. I shall keep you [sporadically] informed. x

Working Animals

Just as well I ended up with a big engine mefinks, a week of lugging glass and water and site crap has made quite a dent in my MPG, but not as much of a dent as it would have made in a smaller engine

Still yet to have bikes in it, but that's tomorrow evenings excitement. It has exceeded way beyond expectations, which is always good. Still needs a name though ^o)

Mobile maps

Although the new Microsoft live maps version of google earth absoloutlyleaves google standing at the moment, google DO have google maps for yo' phone.

and it works, and you can find where you are, and a sattelite view route of how to get where you want to be.
its ace (though not amazingly cheap to run at aroun 110kb a screen.
downloading and having a good look around derby cost me 2quid worth of DL time (but i get 4 quid amonth free) we will see how quick i use up the remaining 2 quid!

I'm sure its just me, with too much time on my hands and not enough excitement in life, but this is really getting on my boobs.

How come, there are two types of calories? Wikipedia explains:

calorie was never an SI unit. Modern definitions for calorie fall into two classes:

The small calorie or gram calorie approximates the energy needed to increase the temperature of 1 gram of water by 1 °C. This is about 4.184 joules.
The large calorie or kilogram calorie approximates the energy needed to increase the temperature of 1 kg of water by 1 °C. This is about 4.184 kJ, and exactly 1000 small calories.

Basicly, this allows companies to put on the front of the packets for food "only 15 calories!!"
while on the reverse, it says "15,000 calories"
why should the figures be different by a factor of a thousand for people who read the front and people who read the back?
Its not like it matters, as long as you keep reading the same side of the packet, but its daft!
at least, the front of the back should say gramcals, in the same way the back says Kcals
I think nutrition companies are using the fact that the system is antique and full of holes in its standards, to thier advantage, and convincing people incorrect information (which i guess is what advertising is all about, especially when aimed at the fairer sex)

Officially the best thing on the interweb so far! go play samorost 1 and 2, 2 is a smidgen better in every resepct but 1 is the original i guess, and still excellent.
a really detailed but still simple game based on exploting the surroundings with the mouse pointer, finding things that do stuff, and linking the actions togther to solve the puzzles
and some awesome graphics (1 has a few low points, like photographic faces which dont fit the feel of the game, and a bit of clipart (sick) but all in all, awesome.
total play time about half an hour if you havent played it before i would say

Thought i'd dust off the car today, as its been about 4 years, and got a bit carried away. washers in all the pushings to stop the chassis rattling, regreased the gearbox, cleaned all the contacts, cleaned and setup the shocks properly (oil dampened progressive coils dont you know, eat that Tamia Fighter Buggy with your crappy plain coils on plastic sliders)
could do with a new speed controller as the metal contacts are pretty worn and its reluctent to reverse, perhaps i'll be persuaded to spend a couple of quid on an electronic one off fleabay (parrently they improve battery life too)
tis much faster than i remember! could do with new tyres as slips and slides all over the shop at the moment.

from what i understand (and it is understandable) people spend their entire (genuinely entire) working lives trying to escape the cube farm. so how come no one will let me in one?!?!

i'm praying (yes its getting religious) that once driving is undercontrol i should get in to one without toooo much of a problem, and im getting all the dim replyio applications out of the way for free. I'm telling everyone this, but that only highlights how little there is going on in my life at the moment; categorically, nothing.)

Then again, maybe i'm just not what people are looking for. call me a pessimist.... "you pessamist"... but outlook at the moment is so bleak.
Am bored of the everlasting holiday, and hoovering and mowing are getting repetative, the grass dosent grow fast enough to warrent it, and the carpet dosent bloody grow at all!

The old control system was
A: not very stong due to its vertical configuration
B: Rubbish because of poor valve set up. each move built up more and more pressure in the system and eventually it became very heavy to move. now it has "ports" (missing hoses) to let out the used air, and allow for much smoother lighter action. i moved the horizontal pivot piston too to allow for a wider range of movement with less load.
I'm sure you are as impressed as I am.

Latest lego thingy. a Pneumaticly powered/controled gimble for a PlayStation2 Eyetoy.
iT should really run off a pump or a compressed air tank (apparenlty they are the basis for some of the lego robotics systems i found out afterwards) but it works ok-ish with a master cylinder.

(i was strimming some long medow to within an inch of its life) i came across das Automower.
its pretty cool, and a nice idea. i dunno how much it would cost though.
However, the programming on it looks far too simple for my liking :S
its got no system to its mowing, a completley random pattern, which the website claims makes for a even lawn with no patter visible. but it also means there are little tufts which by the rules of chaos theory (if you can call them rules, being chaos) which will never get cut, or very rarely.
Anyhoo, the point i was getting at;
I could SO make a better one ;-p
and why isnt is solar powered too?

At around a year old, im pretty impressed this little jar is still alive, let alone thriving (so it would seem). I'm a little confused how there always seems to be only one snail and one water beetle, but im sure they work it out some how between them (if you dont follow my gist go and read up on Noahs ark)

Nehoo, for such a tiny jar, with a rather small air buffer at the top (air buffers absorb any excess either O2 or CO2 and help the system balance, to balance a Biosphere with no air buffer is supposedly very tricky) i'm pretty impressed.
im gonna try a bigger jar next i think, with a big wine making jar, though i chose this sweet & sour sauce jar due to its flat sides, letting it be viewed very comfortably.
if i do get round to a big one, ill keep mon weblog updated with its progress of course.

my list of priorities for a house (in the distant future) has gone out the window. it needs a tree big enough to take a treehouse primarily! none of this "near a tree but really on stilts" rubbish. up a tree, supported by the tree only, sitting on a net of branches. if it was in a wood it could be up several trees. sigh.
maybe ill try drawing some trees in the garden...

2005 GR-1 Concept

Not exactly new news, but i thought i'de point it out anyway. The best lookign car in the universe ever HAS to be the 2005 Ford Shelby GR-1 Concept

Anyone who dosent agree is just plain wrong.
The original GT40 is close, but dosent quite cut it, its just not as mean as the GR-1, a bit too pretty perhaps?
(If Project Gotham is anything to go by however she has got a fat ass, the GT40 is blatently the better car on that front)

Pirate Laws

A pirate does not ask for directions. He relies only on his gut feeling, a compass, or a treasure map.

Parrots are the preferred pirate companion. Monkeys are an acceptable substitute, unless they fling their feces at people. Then they are an awesome substitute.

When fishing, a pirate uses either a sword, a knife, or his bare hands. Use of a hook is only acceptable in the event the pirate is missing a hand.

Pirates shall always wear boots, except in the case of a peg leg. Then one boot is acceptable. Flip-flops are right out.

Pirates do not cry, except in the case of the loss of a shipload of rum.

When describing the size of a treasure, a pirate is required to exaggerate by at least 130%. Flowers are not treasure under any circumstances, unless said flowers are made out of gold.

A pirate shall never wear lipstick, nail polish, or capri pants. Actually, that kinda goes without saying.

No pirate shall discuss his feelings, unless his feelings include gutting a man from stem to stern and spilling his entrails.

A pirate should always remove his hat in the presence of a bartender.

During a swordfight, swordfighting insults are required. In the event both participants are still alive at the end of the fight, the participant with the superior insults shall be declared the victor.

No pirate shall ever wear a "fanny pack".

All foods prepared by a pirate must include rum, grog, or beer. Boone's and other "Wench Punch" is prohibited.

A pirate may never compliment another pirate on the softness of his hands.

No pirate shall wear a bracelet or a necklace, unless it is the tooth or tusk of an animal he killed. If in the presence of cannibals, a necklace is acceptable camouflage, but only if said necklace is made of human toes.

Pirate Law: Dousing oneself in beer is a perfectly acceptable replacement for a shower.

No pirate shall drink Grog out of a glass. Grog is only to be consumed either straight from the barrel, or from a mug heavy enough to to kill a man.

Three-cornered hats, headbands and bandanas are the only acceptable headwear for pirates. Pirate Law: A pirate does not use the word "Fabulous". Ever.

No pirate shall attend a movie with less than an Arrrr rating.

Only a pirate is capable of killing another pirate. If you are not a pirate (let's say a ninja) and wish to challenge a pirate, they have a word for that. Corpse.

Pirate Law: "ARRRRRRRRRRR..." is a perfectly acceptable answer to any question.

A pirate does not "go shopping". Unless by "shopping", you mean "killing".

Peglegs must be made of timber or some other suitable wood. Plastic, ceramic, porcelain, or metal peglegs are utterly unnacceptable, simply because it complicates the use of the phrase "shiver me timbers".

Real pirates have chest hair. If you cannot grow chest hair, you may be a cabin boy.

Under no circumstances is a comb-over an acceptable pirate hairdo.

A pirate does not snuggle with an animal, unless he is trying to snap its neck. But I guess that wouldn't really be "snuggling".

Two pirates must never share a bed or a hammock. It is perfectly acceptable for one pirate to sleep on the floor, or on a pile of treasure.

When setting out on a voyage, a pirate does not pack a suitcase. He is only to bring what he can carry under his arms, or what his wench can carry on her back.

A pirate does not mow the lawn. Lawns are for landlubbers.

Lifting or removing one's eyepatch is extremely impolite but is not considered an insult. It's just kinda gross. Likewise, one should never remove another pirate's eyepatch, except with a sword to the face.

Pirates never use the words "fresh" or "feelings," and certainly not together (as in "I have that not-so-fresh feeling").

A pirate must never visit a tanning salon. If he is not already tan enough from searching for treasure, he hasn't been searching hard enough.

While creativity is encouraged during any barfight or battle at sea, pirates may only use the following types of sword; falchions, scimitars, rapiers, and particularly long knives. Katanas or any other Ninja sword are strictly forbidden, unless the Pirate rips off a Ninja's arm and hurls the arm, and attached Katana, as a projectile.

Mobile blogging is winding me up NO end,
THEORETICALY i should be able to send MMS messages to blogger and have them published as posts... But Nooooo, it wont play, not matter what i try to do.
i eventually found a little program for my mobile, which would do it, and after getting it warmed up and all the data entered into it, the username box for the blogger account was too short by 1 letter!!, if i hadnt upgraded to the new blogger (which is no different for me whatsoever) it would have worked.
I, as you may have gathered, have found a VERY convoluted way of sending messages to blogger, via remote sms email accounts on my phone, but this limits me to 125 characthers, and is a bit rubbish to be honest. NOT what i wanted.
I think I will go and harrass orange tommorow and find out why my email on my phone dosent work properly.
grrr and bugger!
and dont get me STARTED on remote connections to flickr! do i risk winding myself up with exploring picassa??

I got a new Jelly Bone, and although it had some rather stressful 'teething' troubles it is now [Touch Wood!] fixed. It comes with a rubbish operating system (which Siemens dont deny) and they offer an up grade for the software version, which snowballed into more problems
nehoo, i sorted the mess that was the file structure on the handset, had a go at a poor man in a call center in india and now its gravy

Beta.Blogger is on the loose, watch out Microsoft, Google are going to kick your ASS'S (and the sooner the better to be completly honest). What with "YouTube now under the google wing, there dosent seem to be much the cant do. The list of Google brothers,sisters and distant cousin websites found under the more button on google is growing by the day, often unchecked even regular users such as yours truley, If Google really wanted to spit on Microsofts Party, they need one simple thing.
An operating system.
Corperate megamonoliths that they are, Microsoft are getting trampled by the barrage of freeware replacing them, firefox, google this, google that, and the office clones out there floating about in cyberspace ripe for the picking of everyone but the most dedicated (or technophobic) Microsoft users.
These systems are generaly more stable, easier to get hold of and install, smaller (due to be downloadbles) which is always good on a KISS system like so many sensible people nowadays ;p
and most of all FREE, the only issue they have, is that they require windows as an OS, windows itself bugged to the backteeth, reliant on patch after patch, most of which i swear are monitering and adware.

we need a OS that displays all the Google Philosiphies
Simple, easy to follow, reliable and effective.

no unessacary junk running in the memory that the OS cant live without
no reliance on other programs (for some reason my Itunes requires Wmedia Player to be availible to work, which is odd as its Apple vs MS)

once there is a Google OS, basic as you like, Firefox etc will flourish, and you will rule the world!
we will save tonnes of money, stress and general heartache at the the hands of the merciless MS

End of term BEFORE FOOD: - £900

Its not the rents fault, its just that this term is gay and requires lots of months, it should balance out, next term where for a grand you only have 600 quid rent, for 2 terms, but thats not the point, the numbers are ugly and i "need" a new helmet, gloves, and cleats. none fo which i NEED but all of which are a terribly good idea due to the whole "impact" thing that comes with MTBing.

and then theres food of course, around 160 quid a term, and wear and tear on bikes, ie, chains and bits wot get broked. not that it can be helped, but its still GAY.

I think to make myself feel better im going to forcast next years spending a bit, and also chase the inland revenue some more to get that tax back, the buggers.

"I have a project folder I wish to send to Kate Rahn, who works up on the next floor on the other side of the building. I hit the 'Robot Pool' Icon on my desktop computer and up pops a task form, pre-filled with my own desk ID and name. I key in the end-destination I will want, check a task selection (in this case, 'Delivery') and press 'Submit'. If I don’t happen to know Kate’s desk ID by heart, I can key her name (or enough for the PC to recognize who I am talking about - or I can browse the employee directory for her destination ID).
In a moment, up pops a message that indicates that robot R17 is on its way to my desk and gives me an estimated time of arrival (ETA). 'Great', I exclaim silently to myself - R17 is one of my favorites; painted ‘round its body with a scene from the Rocky Mountains.
Shortly, R17 wheels up to my desk and announces itself in a soft robotic voice. I place the project folder in the robot's carry-tray, select the 'GO' button on the robot task form on my PC and off the robot scoots to make it's way to Kate's desk. In the meantime, a message appears on Kate's PC that R17 is on its way, sent by me, and with an ETA countdown-minutes digital-indicator beside the message.
Following internally stored facility-maps of the building, the robot tracks the shortest path to the elevator, calls and operates the elevator digitally, avoids people and obstacles (objects not on the maps), and shortly arrives at Kate's desk. Kate's not there. The robot waits patiently for an appropriate period of time, dispenses its carry-tray's contents into Kate's in-basket and then heads for the nearest robot pool location.
Robots also grab coffee and snacks from the Starbuck's cafe on the first floor, deliver and/or retrieve copies"

it then plays you as a internet radio station a listing compiled of you favorite bands, and bands like them you may or may not have heard of.
you can even, mid track select options such as:

its half way between sticking with the music you know and love, and exploring the stuff you dont.

what to write? About biscuits, about lego, about hell knows what i was thinking about yesterday.
i propose a pimp in the style of pimp my snack
a chocolate bourbon, much like the custard cream, with angel delight filling, and make a bucket of hot chococlate to dunk it in!!
what a brilliant plan, then invite many many people over to eat it and drink the bucket of hot choccy. Cracking! I think it would make a worthy pimp for pimp my snack.
Also watched Wallace and Gromit and the curese of the waere rabbit last night, which was ace, of course.
its all kicking off, just one exam to go! dunno what else to waffle on about so ta taa for now!
